Abstract

SSI conducted an archaeological-historical survey of two river crossings in Floyd County, Georgia at the request of the Colonial Pipeline Company, Western Region, from February 28 through March 2. Four archaeological sites were recorded during the survey. Evidence obtained during the survey indicated that Colonial Pipeline River Crossing Sites #1 and #4 failed to meet minimal requirements for inclusion to the National Register of Historic Places. Two sites, Site #5 at the Etowah Crossing, and the Selman Site at the Oostanaula Crossing, were recommended for testing. Colonial Pipeline River Crossing Site #5, located at the Etowah Crossing, was determined to have been almost totally destroyed by agricultural activity and previous construction, thus no further work is recommended. The Selman Site, at the Oostanaula Crossing, was determined to contain an intact cultural deposit with feature. Additionally, the Selman Site contains a nineteenth century ferry slip attributed to Pope's Ferry. The Selman Site is recommended to the National Register of Historic Places. Recommendations for the Selman Site are either avoidance or mitigation.
