Abstract

Cultural resources survey and evaluation was conducted in the Lake Seminole Project Area, Gadsden and Jackson Counties, Florida and Seminole and Decatur Counties, Georgia, by the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, under contract with the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers, Mobile District. During two seasons of fieldwork, in 1978 and 1979, 302 prehistoric and historic archaeological sites and one historic building were located, by surface survey and subsurface testing according to a statistically controlled research design. An extensive literature search produced data on many sites known from earlier surveys, some of which were relocated. All information recovered is used to expand current interpretations of cultural chronology and process over the estimated 12,000 years of human habitation in the area. One hundred sixty-four of the sites located are judged to meet the criteria for eligibility to the National Register of Historic Places. Recommendations are presented for the management and preservation of these significant resources.
