Abstract

On April 23, 1984, the author conducted a cultural resource survey in Tract 185 of Compartment 172 on the Oconee National Forest. Field reconnaissance and subsurface testing in this tract revealed one historic house site known from a previous road survey and several clusters of rock piles located on ridge spur slopes in the southwestern end of the tract. An examination of these cultural resources revealed that the house site has been heavily disturbed and lacks cultural integrity and that the rock piles located in the tract are associated with field clearing to facilitate cultivation. Given the ubiquity of these cultural features on the Oconee National Forest, many of which are in a more undisturbed condition, the house site and rock piles in Tract 185 are unlikely to provide significant archaeological information. It is recommended that Tract 185 of the proposed Cannon Exchange be cleared from impact to cultural resources.
