Abstract

This paper reports on the Cultural Resources survey conducted on Causton's Bluff, Chatham County, Georgia. Approximately 75 acres of land have been slated for development by the Causton's Bluff Land Associates. Since some of this development would require federal and state permits, an assessment of cultural resources was required. During the course of the archaeological survey in November and December 1983, several historic and prehistoric sites were 4 identified. The majority of these sites have, to varying degrees , the potential to be included on the National Register of Historic Places. Since this resources survey was designed to identify archaeological sites, actual eligibility can not be demonstrated for some of the sites. In most cases, additional testing is recommended unless rerouting of proposed roadways, riprapping or other planned alterations to the landscape are done. The sites range in time from circa 500 B.C. to the Civil War. Most have the potential for yielding valuable, and in some cases, apparently unique, information about America's past inhabitants. While some of this information is of importance to state and local history, the research potential of other sites extends beyond Georgia's borders although it is probably not national in scope.
