Abstract

During a 5-day period from January 18-27, 1983, the author conducted a cultural resource survey over a total of 1417 acres in Compartments 14 and 15 in the Tallulah Ranger District of the Chattahoochee National Forest in Rabun County, Georgia. A non-probability sampling design which included pedestrian reconnaissance and subsurface testing located nine aboriginal sites and two historic cabin sites. Of these sites, GA05S14, GA05S15, GA05S16, GA05S17 and GA05Sl8 are. recommended for protection from adverse impact. These sites contain intact cultural deposits and are considered potentially eligible for nomination to the National Register. One of these sites, GA05S17, is located in an area of proposed impact from logging operations. However, this prehistoric site will be protected from logging operations by the U.S. Forest Service. Sites GA05S15, GA05S14 GA05Sl6 and GA05Sl8 are aboriginal and historic sites located in areas with no immediate plans for ground disturbing activities. The remaining sites have been moderately to highly disturbed by cultivation, logging and road construction and warrant no further investigations. it is recommended that the remaining timber sale stands and adjoining acreage should be cleared from impact to cultural resources.
