Abstract

In July and August 1989, cultural resource surveys were undertaken in the Oconee National Forest to protect and preserve such resources. Parts of six forest compartments were surveyed covering 2,370 acres. A total of 25 sites and 28 isolated finds were located. Thirteen of these sites will need testing to determine their eligibility under National Register criteria. Seven sites were prehistoric lithic scatters, ten were prehistoric ceramic scatters, and seven sites were late nineteenth to early twentieth century house sites. Two historic cemeteries recorded will not be affected by future National Forest activity. An interesting note is that all of the ceramic scatters found consisted primarily of simple stamped ceramics with very few being stamped or incised. These particular sites may be instrumental in answering questions about the Mossy Oak/Vinning question in the central Piedmont area of Georgia.
