Abstract

Cobb County plans to expand its airport, McCollum Field, in three phases between 1987 and 2005 in accordance with the Federal Aviation Administration-approved master plan. The first project is to extend the runway 1740' (544m) eastward, plus 1000' (312.5m) more for an overrun area. Two archeological sites were found within the project area. One site exists on airport land which will be developed in the future. Eleven sites have been found on adjacent land, privately owned. The cultural background of the area and natural resources are discussed at length.
