Abstract

On behalf of the Roswell Historical Society, an archeological survey was conducted at the presumed location of the Roswell Manufacturing Company's first cotton mill (ca. 1839). The survey reviewed available primary and secondary source material and conducted a thorough search of about one acre (0.4 ha) along Big Creek in Roswell, Georgia. The literature review and field survey concluded that the first factory was located about 1000 ft (305 m) downstream (west) of a second factory built in ca. 1854. Test excavations are recommended to confirm that the first factory is located here.
