Abstract

Archeological survey and testing was conducted by Southern Research at the Keys site in Towns County, Georgia near the town of Young Harris. The site was occupied by the Keys family from the nineteenth century until 1950 when it was abandoned. The site is on land that recently was developed into a state golf resort and the work was done for the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Parks, Recreation, and Historic Sites Division. During the investigations, 94 shovel tests were excavated at 5 m intervals, two 1 x 2 m test pits were excavated, and controlled surface collections of 10 m squares were made. A small number of nineteenth century artifacts were found with a preponderance of artifacts from the first half of the twentieth century. The site was recommended eligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places and will be preserved beneath a layer of soil, which will be maintained as a grassy corridor at the Park's driving range.
