Abstract

The survey for the proposed widening of Parker Road was conducted on September 16 and 20, 1994 by Garrow & Associates, Inc. The intention of this survey was to identify cultural resources within the primary impact zone and the Area of Potential Effect (APE) for construction. The study corridor is 27.4 m (90 feet) wide and is 1.02 km (.64 miles) in length along the present Parker Road. The study corridor extends from the intersection with Flat Shoals Road to Culpepper Drive. The corridor was visually inspected along the entire length, and areas that appeared likely to contain intact prehistoric or historic remains were systematically shovel tested. The area has been subjected to substantial recent development. Those areas that appeared to have a degree of depositional integrity did not yield any evidence of past human activity. The survey discovered a single isolated find within the study area. Isolated finds are not eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places, and no further cultural resource investigations are recommended at that location. The 7.5 minute quadrangle map indicates a cemetery location at the northwest corner of Culpepper Drive and Parker Road. No cemetery was noted in that location. However, a cemetery is located just south of the southwest corner of that intersection. Since the Abandoned Cemetery and Burial Act (Georgia Code § 3~721) requires a mitigation or preservation plan if changes occur in the use of land adjoining cemeteries, a plan to this effect should be implemented.
