Abstract

During 1997 and early 1998 Fort Stewart, Georgia underwent Southern Pine Beetle infestations of epidemic proportions. In an attempt to contain the expansion of the infested areas while still remaining in compliance with applicable cultural resources management legislation, Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with the Georgia State Historic Preservation Officer that allowed for reporting to occur after the worst of the epidemic had passed. Some 69 infested areas covering nearly 164.5 acres were evaluated for cultural resources, of these, 10 or 14.5% contained cultural resources of some interest (albeit, not all Eligible or Indeterminate for the National Register).
