Under contract with Jordan, Jones & Goulding, Inc., Brockington and Associates, Inc. performed an intensive archaeological resources survey (Phase I) within the Georgia Transmission Corporation's proposed Hickory Level Substation project tract. The project tract included approximately 38 hectares (98 acres) of a proposed electrical substation. Survey tasks were completed in compliance with criteria defined under Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and to comply with regulations implementing this legislation (36 CFR Part 800: Protection of Historic Properties). No previously recorded archaeological sites are known within the project tract, and no archaeological sites have been recorded within the general vicinity. During field investigation, approximately 400 shovel tests were excavated within the project tract. All exposed ground surfaces and slopes were also inspected. Shovel tests typically revealed 5 to 10 cm (1.97 to 3.94 in) of reddish brown silt and reddish brown sandy silt over deeper reddish clayey subsoil. No artifacts were recovered and no archaeological sites or isolated finds were identified. As a result of background research and field inspection, no significant archaeological resources will be affected by the proposed Hickory Level Substation. Cultural resources clearance is recommended.
