Abstract

In late 2000 and July 2001, the areas of potential effect for three bridge replacement projects on S.R. 137 in Taylor County were archeologically surveyed. Each of the three project areas contained one site. We recommend that the site at Whitewater Creek (Site 9TR116), which contained a rare Paleoindian projectile point and other tools and sherds, is potentially eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. We recommend that the sites at Cedar Creek and Little Whitewater Creek are not eligible for the National Register. In response to our assessment of eligibility for site 9TR116 at Whitewater Creek, project engineers redesigned the project so that required rights-of-way and construction easements would have no adverse effect on the site. That is, proposed construction will be restricted to existing disturbed portions of the site. Thus, in regard to archeological resources, we recommend that all three projects should be granted clearance to proceed.
