Abstract

On 2 October 2002, Brockington and Associates, Inc. conducted archaeological resources survey for a proposed bridge replacement in Sumter and Macon counties, Georgia. The bridge is located at the intersection of State Route (SR) 49 with Sweetwater and Viney Creek, approximately 1.6 km (1 mile) south of the town of Andersonville. This investigation was carried out under contract with The LPA Group, Inc., for the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT). The project was conducted in compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act, and 36 CFR Part 800, by personnel qualified under 36 CFR Part 61. Background research conducted through the Georgia Site Files Database, maintained by the University of Georgia, Athens, and the Department of Natural Resources, Historic Preservation Division (BPD) identified one previously recorded archaeological site within 0.8 km (0.5 mi) of the APE. Site 9MA53 was recorded by archaeologists working on the prison camp at the Andersonville National Historic Site. While the site of the prison camp proper lies approximately 500 meters (1,640 R) from the project area, the southernmost boundary of the National Historic Site property lies 305 meters (1,000 ft) north of Sweetwater Creek, east of SR 49 and comes close to the northern end of the project corridor. Field survey identified no archaeological resources. Based on the results of background and field investigations, the proposed bridge replacement will have no effect on significant archaeological resources. We, therefore, recommend the project for archaeological clearance.
