Abstract

On July 16th through 20th, 2007, Brockington and Associates, Inc., conducted an intensive cultural resources survey of the proposed Range Fuels Plant near Soperton, Treutlen County, Georgia. The survey tract consisted of approximately 182 acres situated about 3 km (2 miles) northwest of downtown Soperton just off Georgia Highway 29. This investigation was carried out for CH2M Hill, Inc. and was conducted in compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act, and 36 CFR Part 800, by personnel qualified under 36 CFR Part 61, Appendix A. During the structures survey, no intact structures older than 50 years were identified within the project area. There are the remains of an old farmstead and barn, but are in such dilapidated condition, that they are only considered below as an archaeological resource. Additionally, no structures which appeared to be older than 50 years were within the project's APE. There are a few somewhat older structures along GA Highways 15/78 and 29, however, they lie outside of the project's APE. They are specifically buffered from the proposed project by swampland as well. They were not considered within this study. Since no NRHP-eligible resources were identified, and none are known within the project's APE, we recommend cultural resources clearance for the undertaking. No additional archaeological or historic structures work is recommended.
