Abstract

Terracon conducted a Phase I Archaeological Survey in preparation for the widening of I-20 between Thornton Road/SR 6, Douglas County and Hamilton E. Holmes Road/SR 280, Fulton County in accordance with a contract from Earth Tech and the Georgia Department of Transportation. Approximately 13.8 km (8.6 miles) were surveyed adjacent to the existing I-20 right-of-way to accommodate High Occupancy Vehicle lanes in both west and east directions on the north and south sides of I-20 respectively. The Area of Potential Effect (APE) for this project consists of a 13.8-km (8.6-mile) by 30 m corridor on both sides of I-20 containing the existing ROW and the land adjacent to it. The purpose of this survey was to locate archaeological resources within the APE and to make recommendations concerning their eligibility for listing on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Eleven archaeological occurrences were found during the survey, six of which are archaeological sites and five are isolated finds. None of the archaeological sites are recommended eligible for NRHP listing and no further archaeological testing is recommended.
