Abstract

At the request of Georgia Department of Transportation, Terracon conducted a Phase I Archaeological Survey of two proposed Georgia Department of Transportation bridge replacement projects (BRST-2797 (4)) at Clear Creek and New River. The survey conducted for the Clear Creek bridge replacement is one of two bridges in the proposed project. The New River bridge replacement was surveyed and documented separately in 2006.The projects include widening the structures and paved approach lanes. The survey area consisted of approximately 1,000 linear meters to the east and west of the existing bridge on SR 100 over Clear Creek, 4.2 miles west of Corinth in Heard County, Georgia. The fieldwork was completed on April 18, 2003. No new sites were identified during this survey. No further archaeological investigation of the proposed project area is recommended. This report includes a description of the project area in terms of previous investigations conducted in the area, the cultural sequence, the environmental setting, and the results of the survey. A detailed summary of the surveyed areas and previously recorded sites is presented in Section 3 (Previous Archaeological Research) and Section 6 (Present Archaeological Project).
