Abstract

In February 1999, Brockington and Associates conducted an intensive cultural resources survey of the proposed Chastain Meadows Regional Stormwater Detention Facility in Cobb County, Georgia. The proposed project will involve construction of an earthen embankment dam on Noonday Creek approximately 153 meters (500 feet) upstream from Chastain Meadows Parkway. The survey was conducted for Greenhorn and O'Mara, Inc. as part of Section 404 of the Clean Water Act. The goals of the survey were to identify any cultural resources within (and in the vicinity of) the project's Area of Potential Effect (APE) and to evaluate their National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) potential. The survey consisted of background research and cultural resources field survey. Background research was conducted at the Georgia Archaeological Site Files in Athens and the Historic Preservation Division (HPD) of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources in Atlanta to identify any previously recorded cultural resources within 0.8 kilometer (0.5 mile) of the tract. The field survey consisted of the excavation of shovel test pits in parallel transects over the entire project area.
