Abstract

The project area is a located in northern Lowndes County, just west of the Hahira town center. The rerouting of the existing Union Road (CR 38) is required to allow for the redesign and upgrade of the Interstate 75 interchange with Main Street, Hahira (GA 122, Exit 29). Since the initial survey for the proposed interchange improvements (Stoops 2007), the planned realignment for Union Road has been redefined. While there is some overlap, the redesigned Union Road appears to be sufficiently outside the previously investigated corridor to require additional survey. A distance of approximately 488 m (1600 feet) along the corridor to the north of Main Street and 122 m (300 feet) along the corridor to the south of Main Street falls outside of the corridor as previously defined. This area ranges from 0 to 25 m (0 to 80 feet) wide within the proposed right-of-way. The Area of Potential Effect for the realignment of Union Road is confined to the existing and additional right-of-way for the new corridor. This corridor is 1.1 km (0.65 mile) in length and is primarily around 37 m (120 feet) wide. The southern end includes resurfacing the existing corridor and the creation of a cul-de-sac over a total distance of approximately 190 m (630 feet). The northern tie-in with West Stanfil Road includes an additional 60 m (200 feet). Construction is expected to be confined to this new and existing right-of-way.
