Abstract

A Phase II archaeological testing investigation was conducted on the Barrett Parkway Site 9 (9C0352) located in Cobb County, Georgia by Garrow & Associates, Inc. for the Cobb County Department of Transportation. The site, which consists of a 100 foot stretch of earthworks associated with the Atlanta Campaign of 1864, was identified during the 1992 Phase I survey of the right-of-way corridor for the proposed Barrett Parkway Extension project. The purpose of the investigation was to determine the integrity of the archaeological deposits at the site and assess its eligibility for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places. Additional historical research and graphic documentation of the Western and Atlantic Railroad Culvert (Barrett Parkway Site 7) and an assessment of the impact of the alterations in the corridor design on the integrity of Barrett Parkway Site 8 were also conducted as part of the Phase II investigations. From these data, it is felt that both 9CO352 and the railroad culvert are eligible for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Analysis of the modifications to the corridor route indicates that historical integrity of Barrett Parkway Site 8 will not be compromised and finding for No Adverse Effect is made.
