Abstract

Storms exceeding the 300-year flood caused excessive damage to the eastern end of the bridge located on Club Drive over Sweetwater Creek. Washout and scour occurred at the eastern abutment, which damage the end wall, gabions, and a portion of the deck. Emergency bridge repairs were necessary in order to keep this bridge open to the traveling public. Repairs included: driving additional H piles; demolition of failed abutments (which were replaced with new walls); installation of a new retaining wall system to replace failed gabions; repairing and filling voids; installation of rebar and concrete; patching of the bridge deck; placement of rip rap and slope repair; and new striping and guardrail were installed. All work was completed in January 2010 and took place within the existing right-of-way, and no new right-of-way was acquired.
