Abstract

This report documents the preliminary archaeological survey for cultural resources performed within an area to be impacted by the proposed Brookstone substation. This substation is to be constructed on Mars Hill Road, south of Acworth and north of Lost Mountain, Georgia. The survey area is entirely within a section of dissected uplands of the Piedmont physiographic province in north Georgia. The survey area was subjected to a pedestrian survey and shovel test. Although the entire area was in secondary growth forest, remains of agricultural activities were encountered. Terrace remnants or erosion control features contoured the entire ridge. As this was a common practice in the region, these historic remains are deemed to be not significant. No further work is required relative to these remains. The shovel tests recovered evidence of prehistoric occupation on a ridge running along the northeastern portion of the study area. These remains are restricted to the area near the crest of the ridge. It is an area that is unlikely to yield subsurface deposits, particularly in light of the land modifications which have already taken place on the site. Nonetheless, this area has been designated as an archaeological site of unknown affiliation and function. It is recommended that these remains require no further testing, and that Oglethorpe Power Corporation be permitted to proceed with the proposed substation construction.
