Abstract

In July and September 1999, Brockington and Associates, Inc. conducted a cultural resources survey of proposed Batesville transmission line corridors, located near Batesville, Georgia. The preferred corridor is approximately 4.5 km (2.8 miles) in length and 98 meters (100 ft) in width. Beginning in Cherokee County south of Antioch Road, this corridor runs south and west, crossing the northern tip of Fulton County, before terminating at Sugar Pike Road. Two alternate corridor segments at the north end of the preferred corridor are approximately 0.4 km (0.25 miles) and 1.0 km (1.6 miles) in length, respectively. These investigations, conducted in compliance with the National Historic Preservation Act of 1976 and regulations implementing this law (36 CFR Part 800) consisted of background research and intensive field survey. The primary goals of the survey were the identification all archaeological resources located within 0.8 km (0.5 mile) of the project corridor, the identification all archaeological and architectural resources within the project corridor, and the evaluation of these resources in terms of their eligibility for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Background research identified no previously recorded archaeological resources within 0.8 km (0.5 mile) of the project corridors; however, six previously recorded architectural resources were located within 0.8 km (0.5 mile) of the project corridors. This cultural resources survey identified one isolated find and two structures either within or in the vicinity of the preferred Batesville transmission line corridor and substation tract. None of these resources are considered to be eligible for the NRHP. Based on the results of this investigation, no significant cultural resources will be impacted by the proposed construction and cultural resources clearance is recommended.
