Abstract

During late July 1989, archaeological exploration and mitigation work was conducted on the site of the proposed Jek:yll Island Club Hotel Annex. This work was mandated because the site was within a National Reigster District and had been previously identified as an archaeological site. Initial stripping of topsoil was followed by trenching to identify subsurface remains along the line of future building footings. While excavation proceeded, interviews with various Jekyll Island Authority personnel were conducted informally. The trenching revealed 11 different pipe lines as well as evidence for others. Virtually all of these pipe lines were associated with shell, usually accompanied by very dark soil. Other cultural features such as postmolds and vacant trenches were also noted and recorded. Wall profiles were completed which reveal soil layering and other disturbances. Coupled with obvivous evidence of massive soil disturbance and informant information, the site was determined to possess no significant archaeological resources which might be impacted by proposed construction.
