Abstract

An intensive cultural resources survey was carried out for the proposed Lake Sinclair Water Treatment Facility in Putnam County, Georgia. The project was carried out in compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act by personnel qualified under 36 CFR Part 61. The project is divided into two tracts; an Intake tract approximately 3 hectares (7.6 acres) and the Water Treatment tract 14.3 hectares (35.3 acres). The total area surveyed included approximately 17.4 hectares (43 acres). The project area lies east ofUS Route 441 and northwest ofLake Sinclair (near the confluence of Beaverdam Creek, Cold Branch, and Rooty Creek). This project is northeast of the intersecting boundaries of Putnam, Baldwin, and Hancock counties. No previously identified historic or prehistoric cultural resources were located within the project area boundaries through background research at the State Site Files database, maintained by the Department of Anthropology, University of Georgia; the Historic Preservation Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources; and the State Archives. No archaeological sites were identified during fieldwork. The proposed project will not affect any previously recorded archaeological resources. One architectural resource (Resource PM-GP-1) was located during the present survey. Although this resource is not within the project boundaries, it is within the viewshed. Brockington and Associates, Inc., recommends Resource PM-GP-1 not eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. No additional cultural resources investigations are recommended for this project.
