Abstract

The present report summarizes a cultural resource survey of 606 acres of Compartment 132 (Tract U-201 only), 328 acres of which are available for exchange. The compartment is accessible via S.R. 212 from Resseau's Cross Roads south approximately 0.51 miles. At this point, the compartment boundary begins on the southwest (right)road side and extends approximately 1.4 miles along S.R. 212 to the southern boundary of the compartment. The project area proper (land exchange) extends along S.R. 212 from the northern compartment boundary (above) to a point approximately 500 feet south of Lake Shore Church Road. From here, the project area's southern boundary extends 0.7 mile or a bearing approximatelyS30° west. Prior to the survey, Forest Service land acquisition files, state archeological site files and the listings of the National Register of Historic places were consulted for information pertaining to cultural resources within the project area and Tract U-201 within the compartment. No recorded sites or sites on or eligible for inclusion within the National Register were discovered during the literature search. Land acquisition files indicated that, at the time of acquisition by the Federal Government, the tract supported one 24'xl8'and two 18'x24' frame dwellings in fair condition: three barns: 12'xl4' frame- poor: 14'xl6' frame- good;18'x20' metal roof - fair; and one 12'xl4' frame granary in good condition. Two springs and one well were also noted (USFS, 1954).
