Abstract

Brockington and Associates, Inc., conducted an archaeological survey for the proposed Dresden Substation Project in Coweta County, Georgia, on 19, 20, and 21 of December 2001 for Jordan Jones and Goulding, Inc. Background research and field survey were conducted to: (1) provide accurate and reliable location of archaeological sites within the project area; (2) provide an evaluation of National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) eligibility for all identified archaeological resources; (3) provide sufficient data to assess avoidance alternatives for potentially NRHP eligible resources; and ( 4) provide recommendation for mitigation if avoidance is not possible. This survey was carried out to comply with cultural resource requirements of Section 106 of the 1966 National Historic Preservation Act (1992, as amended), and the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA 1969). Background research revealed no previously recorded archaeological sites within, or near, the project boundaries. Field survey consisted of pedestrian inspection and shovel testing of the entire project area. Visual ground surface inspection in lieu of shovel testing was conducted when the area was determined to be highly disturbed or eroded due to the extensive logging which has taken place within the project boundaries. The entire project area shows signs of considerable surface and subsurface disturbance as a result of the logging. Brockington and Associates, Inc., found no significant archaeological resources within the project boundaries. Archaeological clearance for the Dresden Substation is recommended.
