Abstract

This report documents the findings of a Phase II archaeological assessment of two sites in Paulding County, Georgia. These sites, 9PA58 and 9PA59, are located in a proposed development tract for Colony Homes. They were initially discovered during a Phase I survey for this development (Stoops 1994). Both sites are on small, ridgetop locations overlooking Sweetwater Creek. Each site was subjected to controlled surface collection and subsurface testing. These methods yielded prehistoric lithic and ceramic materials from both sites. Site 9PA58 was found to contain a substantial Late Mississippian component. There are indications that intact deposits may still exist on this site. Site 9P A59 is predominantly an Archaic site yielding substantial quantities of quartz debris. However, no indications of intact strata were discovered here.
