Abstract

In compliance with the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) of 1966, as amended, archaeologists with the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) conducted a Phase I intensive survey of the Rook Gwinnett parcel as a potential early acquisition property [CSNHS-0006-00(306), PI# 0006306] for a project to build a grade separated interchange at SR 316 and Cedars Road, Gwinnett County. Fieldwork for the early acquisition was completed in January 2011 by GDOT archaeologists and resulted in the identification of two sites, 9Gw637 and 9Gw638. Site 9Gw637 is a historic lithic scatter associated with a historic stone mound and is considered ineligible for the NRHP. Site 9Gw638 is a Middle Woodland Cartersville Phase village site with a Late Archaic component and is recommended as unknown eligibility for listing in the NRHP and in need of further testing. Following the survey the portion of Site 9Gw638 located within the early acquisition parcel was removed from the area to be purchased. Although the site is now outside of the area being purchased, it was fully delineated as a result of fieldwork for this project and an evaluation is included in this report. As 9Gw638 was removed from the project's area of potential effect no further archaeological work is required for this site. Since 9Gw637 is considered ineligible for listing in the NRHP and is the only site located within the early acquisition parcel, no further archaeological work is necessary to complete the Section 106 process for the early acquisition of the Rook Gwinnett property.
