Abstract

Site 9GE 1511 is an extensive Historic period site with evidence of multiple structures suggestive of a nineteenth century plantation complex located west of Richland Creek (now flooded by Lake Oconee). As shown in Figure 1, the site was first identified as Inventory Property 37 during a 1988 survey of a large tract of land called the A-1 tract. The property was being transferred from the Georgia Power Company to Reynolds Plantation (Espenshade and Mitchell1988:48). Following a 1997 survey of adjoining property by Southeastern Archeological Services (Ledbetter 1998), the SHPO's office requested an accurate map of all property owned by Reynolds Plantation. The locations of the A-1 tract sites were field checked by the senior author on May 9, 1998. The location of site 9GE1511 was found to be relatively accurate, but the site was observed to be significantly larger than shown on the site form. Because the site had been determined ineligible for listing on the National Register, the senior author concluded that, at a minimum, the site should be mapped more thoroughly. Following consultation with Reynolds Plantation, mapping, along with limited metal detecting, was conducted on December 7, 1998. The revised site map is shown as Figure 2.
