Abstract

Data recovery excavations were conducted on a portion of cultural property GP-SN-13, in Screven County, Georgia. Three eight by eight meter blocks were excavated to an average depth of 75 cm. Laboratory analysis revealed that intact cultural stratigraphy was present in certain portions-of each block, and five Analytical Units were defined. Early Archaic Analytical Units were present in the basal levels of each block, and a Middle Archaic Analytical Unit and a Late Archaic Analytical Unit were also present in Block A. The Early Archaic remains were interpreted as representing a residential base within a forager oriented system; lithic reduction was imbedded within the general subsistence pattern. The Middle Archaic material evidences a more logistical situation, probably a procurement station within a collector system. It appears that the Middle Archaic occupation at GP-SN-13 was predominately concerned with the reduction of bifaces, and that the usual range of subsistence activities did not occur. The Late Archaic material from the excavations suggest a forager orientation, probably a residential base.
