Abstract

This report presents the results of an intensive cultural resources survey of 4,690 acres within Compartments CC3, CC4, V1-V4, W1-W3, and Lawson Field, Lawson Army Airfield, Ft. Benning, Georgia and Alabama.. Ninety-seven archaeological sites were identified and 89 isolated finds within ten survey tracts. Two Late Paleoindian, five Early Archaic, 21 Late Archaic, two possible Early Woodland, five Middle Woodland, three Mississippian, 83 Historic Aboriginal (Creek), and 82 Euroamerican components were recorded. The survey provides a detailed settlement history for the Lower Creek occupation associated with the important peace town of Kasita and lays the foundation for the nomination of a discontiguous archaeological historic district for Kasita and its contemporary sites to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). A second potential archaeological historic district is considered for an undocumented mill community as well as six individually eligible sites that predate the Creek occupation. Forty-seven of the sites identified by the survey are recommended as not eligible to the NRHP.
