Abstract

This report documents the findings of a Phase I archaeological survey of 24.28 hectares (60 acres) in central Cherokee County, Georgia. This survey was undertaken in advance of the proposed construction of a Wal-Mart near Canton. The entire project area was subjected to. pedestrian survey. Shovel testing was engaged where surface visibility was limited. Site 9CK9, which was originally reported by Wauchope (1966), was revisited and further defined during this study. Lithic and ceramic materials were recovered from this site which has been reported to contain evidence of every major prehistoric period in Georgia. Site 9CK9 has the potential to contain intact deposits. This site is potentially eligible for inclusion in the NRHP and are therefore recommended for further testing. An additional site, Site 1, was discovered and delineated. This site is an upland lithic scatter on a knoll in the eastern comer of the project area. No indication of depositional integrity was observed. This site is not recommended for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP).
