Abstract

During April 2011 , Edwards-Pitman Environmental, Inc. (EPEI) conducted a Phase I archaeological survey of the Watson Mill Mitigation Site (P.l. No. 0009828). The project tract is located southwest of Carlton in Madison County, Georgia, and consists of approximately 100 acres. The purpose of the tract is to give the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) a means of providing compensatory mitigation for projects in the Broad River basin. The project was conducted under a contract with ARCADIS U.S., Inc. for the GDOT. A review of the Georgia Archaeological Site File (GASF) at the University of Georgia (UGA) in Athens, Georgia, showed that no previously identified archaeological sites have been reported in the project's area of potential effect (APE). However, there are a total of two sites, 9MD 109 and 9MD110, situated within a 1-kilometer radius of the tract. During the course of the survey, three archaeological sites, 9MD205, 9MD206, and 9MD207, were identified. These sites consist of light, fragmentary historic artifact scatters dating primarily to the middle twentieth century. Site 9MD205 has an earthen well; no other features were located. All three sites are situated in an area that has been severely disturbed by silviculture and other activities. Due to their low research potential, 9MD205-207 are recommended as ineligible for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Based on the results of the survey, no further archaeological work is recommended in the proposed APE.
