Abstract

The 10-acre borrow pit is located on the south side of Sugar Valley Road, approximately 0.50 mile east of the road 's intersection with Hardin Bridge Road in Bartow County, Georgia.

Archaeology: A check of the Georgia Archaeological Site Files (GASF) was conducted on December 15, 2009, using the NAHRGIS database. No previously recorded sites are located in the project area. Seven previously recorded archaeological sites, 9BR34, 9BR76, 9BR124, 9BR125, 9BR1105, 9BR938 and 9BR939, are located within a one kilometer radius of the proposed borrow pit site. Site 9BR34 (Hardin Bridge Site) is a prehistoric lithic activity area and a short term (5 to 10 year) occupation site with Middle Woodland component artifacts, which is recommended eligible for the National Register of Historic Places (NRBP). Data recovery has been undertaken at the site within the Area of Potential Effect (APE) for a GDOT project. Sites 9BR124 and 9BR125 are prehistoric fish weirs/rock dams of unknown eligibility for the NRHP. Sites 9BR76 and 9BR1105 are both prehistoric lithic scatters of unknown eligibility, and 9BR938 is a prehistoric lithic scatter recommended ineligible for the NRHP. Site 9BR939 is a prehistoric lithic scatter and twentieth century dump site recommended ineligible.
