Phase II Archeological Evaluations of 12 Sites Robins Air Force Base, Houston County, Georgia

Abstract

Since 1987, 43 previously unknown archaeological sites have been discovered on Robins Air Force Base (AFB). Over the past decade, some of these archaeological resources have been evaluated with respect to their eligibility for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP); however, 12 of these sites have not been so evaluated. The report presents the results of the investigations and the recommendations regarding NRHP eligibility for those 12 sites. The sites include 9HT26, 9HT27, 9HT31, 9HT32, 9HT38, 9HT41, 9HT44, 9HT48, 9HT99, 9HT161, 9HT166, and 9HT167.

Based on the results of the present Phase II testing, it has been determined that only three of these 12 sites—9HT26, 9HT31, and 9HT41—are eligible for listing on the NRHP under Criterion D. The potential exists for sites 9HT26 and 9HT31 to be combined with sites 0HT8 and 9HT30 to form the Sandy Run Creek Archaeological District. Due to the high potential for significant archaeological information to be found on Robins AFB’s southern boundary, this potential district could be protected from all future ground-moving activities or other disturbances.
