Abstract

As a result of the architectural survey, a portion of the previous shipyard was recommended eligible for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). After reviewing the GDOT documentation, the Georgia Historic Preservation Division (HPD) concurred with the recommendation and additional Assessment of Effects documents were compiled by GDOT in association with the new Sidney Lanier Bridge Project (GDOT 1995, 1997, 2000). The 2004 study was also conducted in compliance with Section 106 of the NHP A. It is was completed so that a temporary dock and rail spur, constructed for the New Sidney Lanier Bridge project, could be purchased and retained by the Brunswick Foreign Trade Zone Inc., one of the owners of the previous shipyard property. It was decided by the HPD that future development, partially spurred by the retention of the dock and rail spur would change the historic appearance and character of the previous shipyard property (Reynolds 2003). Therefore, more detailed documentation of the previous shipyard was needed before the incursion of future development. The methods used for this research project are discussed in Chapter 2, the historical context for the J.A. Jones Construction Company Brunswick Shipyard is provided in Chapter 3, and the 2004 architectural survey results and recommendations are discussed in Chapter 4. Appendix A contains additional historic maps of the shipyard, Appendix B contains a list of Liberty Ships constructed at the J.A. Jones- Brunswick Shipyard, and Appendix C contains copies of medium format photograph contact sheets of the shipyard. Larger images of these contact sheets, along with photograph logs and photograph locator maps, are provided in an accompanying notebook. Negatives are available at the Georgia Department of Natural Resources Historic Preservation Division (HPD) in Atlanta.
