Caldwell, Joseph Ralston

Archaeological excavations on the Georgia, Florida, and South Carolina coasts have been carried on intermittently ever since the Civil War. Probably the first investigator was Jeffries Wyman (Wyman, 1875), who dug into the shell mounds along the St. Johns River in Florida. C. C.

Extensive remains of aboriginal dwelling sites and artificial mounds have been known on the Georgia and South Carolina coasts for a good many years. Through the work of several investigators, especially Clarence B. Moore in the coastal area, and William H.

In our initial report on excavations it was suggested that the long stratigraphic sequence which seemed to be present in the mound offered some hope for determining when the Lower or Underhill Cherokee first came into the Tugalo River region.

On October 25, 1956, the writer proceeded to Tugalo, Georgia to conduct archeological salvage operations in the Hartwell Reservoir area.

The proposed Wallace Dam at Laurens Shoals will flood parts of the Oconee and Apalachee Valleys to a point 435.6 feet above sea level. Counties to be affected by flooding will be Greene, Hancock, Morgan and Putnam. The Georgia Power Company plans to have the dam completed in 1975.

This archaeological survey of the parts of the proposed Trotters Shoals Reservoir lying within the state of Georgia was conducted by the writer during January, 1969.

The present survey tested this site in a number of places, under Mr. Caldwell's able direction, and found that the bases of sane of these mounds are still intact.

The area to be flooded by the Allatoona Dam was examined for archaeological remains by the Smithsonian Institution in February, 12-15, 1946, and during the period November 12, 1946, to April 1, 1947.
