A report that the project area had been filled at some point in the past was confirmed by the apparent burial of the old marsh surface. Traces of the marsh must now be below water table due to our not finding an organic level in the auger test before reaching the water table.

The proposed project is located on the Atlanta Plateau of the Central Upland (LaForge, 1925). The northern end of the project is quite close to the Dahlonega Plateau at its border at Long Branch Creek.

No sites were located. The clay and organic layer in Test #2 would seem to indicate a quiet deposition environment like a shallow backwater. The high land area apparently is a recently drained section of the swamp itself, not a likely site location.

The site files at Georgia State University had a number of sites listed for Laurens County, all of which were located by the 1965 Heart of Georgia Survey. Sites were reported along Turkey Creek, but not at the bridge replacement.

The project involves the construction of a two lane facility on new alignment around the northeast perimeter of Newnan. The project begins east of Newnan at S.R. 34 and County Road 466 and ends at S.R. 34 in West Newnan. Right-of-way has already been acquired for the section from S.R.
