Proposal to the Georgia Power Company for Archaeological Mitigation in the Wallace Dam Tailrace Area

An archaeological survey of the Wallace Dam tailrace area was conducted for the Georgia Power Company in late 1976-early 1977. Two sites, Pm 215 and Pm 247, were located and evaluated by the survey archaeologist, W. Dean Wood (1977).

9Pm260 is located on a high ridge on the western side of the Oconee River 2.2km upstream from the dam. The site consists of a small rockshelter with two open ends formed from large boulders apparently exposed by severe erosion of the ridge (Figure 1).

9Ge146 is located on a relict levee-to the Horseshoe Bend of the Oconee River. The site is located between the Oconee and an abandoned river channel. The site consists of a thin scattering of cultural debris covering an area of approximately 5,000 square meters.

The area to be effected by the proposed bridge construction was surveyed on foot. The survey revealed that there are four large stone piers 10 ft. long, 12 ft. high, at the southwest end of the bridge.
