Project CSNHS-0008-00(431) would construct a compressed diamond interchange (ramp heads spaced 500 feet apart) at the existing at-grade signalized intersection of SR 316 with SR 53, with SR 53 spanning over SR 316. SR 53 is an existing two-lane roadway with rural shoulders.

The proposed project would replace the structurally deficient bridge with a rating of 8.l3 on CR 321/Taliaferro Road over the Chattooga River. The existing two-lane rural section consists of two 9 foot travel lanes and 5 foot shoulders on 50 feet of right-of-way (ROW).

The project proposes to widen US 78/Lexington Road in the city of Athens from a four lane to a six (11-12 foot) lane roadway from the Oconee Street/Oak Street intersection to just east of Winterville Road for an approximate project length of 0.6 miles and design speed of 45 MPH (Figure 1).
