Two days were spent on the field survey. The project area turned out indeed to be heavily developed with the exception of the land immediately adjacent to Walnut Creek.

The project involves the construction of a two lane facility on new alignment around the northeast perimeter of Newnan. The project begins east of Newnan at S.R. 34 and County Road 466 and ends at S.R. 34 in West Newnan. Right-of-way has already been acquired for the section from S.R.

No new sites were disclosed by our survey. The only potential archaeological impact caused by this project would be if Alternate 3 on 166 was selected. The Hutchinson Quarry site

The site files at Georgia State University had a number of sites listed for Laurens County, all of which were located by the 1965 Heart of Georgia Survey. Sites were reported along Turkey Creek, but not at the bridge replacement.

No sites were located. The clay and organic layer in Test #2 would seem to indicate a quiet deposition environment like a shallow backwater. The high land area apparently is a recently drained section of the swamp itself, not a likely site location.

The proposed project is located on the Atlanta Plateau of the Central Upland (LaForge, 1925). The northern end of the project is quite close to the Dahlonega Plateau at its border at Long Branch Creek.

No evidence of prehistoric or historic cultural activities were disclosed by the survey.

A report that the project area had been filled at some point in the past was confirmed by the apparent burial of the old marsh surface. Traces of the marsh must now be below water table due to our not finding an organic level in the auger test before reaching the water table.

This report deals with the archaeological assessment of proposed construction of an approximately 100 mile four-laned facility from S.R. 306 near Coal Mountain, Georgia to the North Carolina border.

RSO-0944(6) is the proposed 35.0 mile improvement and relocation of State Route 257 from Cordele to Albany, Georgia. The project has three sections: (1) widening of the existing two-lane facility to four lanes from north of Albany to south of Cordele - 24.45 miles;
