The Chattooga River Ranger District (RD) of the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forests

The Chattooga River Ranger District (RD) of the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forests is proposing to harvest timber in Rabun County, Georgia on 85 acres in Compartment 28 using a commercial timber contract.

Test excavations were carried out at the Farmer’s Bottom site on March 10-14, 2014. These excavations were carried out using volunteers recruited through the Passport in Time program.

The Farmer's Bottom site, 9ST62, is a Late Mississippian archaeological site located in an area that is a popular location for dispersed recreation activities. These unmanaged activities have the potential to damage the site if it is eligible for the National Register of Historic Places.

Test excavations were conducted at the Farmer’s Bottom site in March 2014. The initial occupation at this site was during the Middle Woodland Cartersville period, 100 B.C. to A.D. 550. A second occupation occurred at the site during the Early Mississippian Etowah period, A.D. 900-1200.

The Heritage Program of the United States Forest Service is tasked with managing the cultural resources located on National Forest lands. In order to better manage the exceptional examples of cultural resources, the agency established the category of Priority Heritage Assets (PHAs).

In 2009 Greene County, Georgia proposed to construct a new bridge on the Cold Springs Road on National Forest land in Compartment 191. Surveys were conducted of four acres and a single prehistoric site was recorded (9GE3522). After the initial field work was completed, the project was halted.

The Oconee Ranger District (Oconee RD) of the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forests has proposed to conduct prescribed burning in Compartment 138 in Jasper County.

The Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forests are located on roughly 865,000 acres of Federal lands in northern and Central Georgia.
