"The Civil War Sites Study Act" was passed by Congress on November 28, 1990, resulting in the establishment of the Civil War Sites Advisory Commission.

The coast of Georgia has long been of interest and a focus of research for the University of Florida. St. Simons Island particularly has been featured with work at Fort Frederica and Cannon's Point.

In January and July, 2001, R.S. Webb & Associates conducted a Phase I cultural resources survey of the proposed 14.2 hectares (35.0 acres) Calhoun-Gordon County airport runway extension and associated improvements site in Gordon County, Georgia.

The eyewitness accounts and later interpretations by historians of the institution of plantation slavery must of necessity reflect the cultural viewpoint of the master class, for the slaves themselves left no records.

A surface survey, conducted February 3, 1973, revealed that there are no archaeological sites located within the area to be effected by the airport expansion.

Near the norther tip of Jekyll Islan, Georgia, stands the tabby ruin known as the Horton House. Built by Captain William Horton, one of Georgia's most important early colonists, the ruin exists as one of the few colonial edifices still standing in the state.

Upon acquisition of the transmission line right-of-way easement, a copy of the easement will be sent to the SHPO for inclusion in the project mitigation plan. The land owner retains fee rights to the property itself.

An attempt was made to survey the proposed fill area of King's Creek at Sea Island Golf Course at St. Simons Island. Large machinery operating in the affected area, but neither the fill nor the footbridges will disturb any archaeological sites.

An investigation of the Glynco Site was conducted between October 5 and October 12, 1974. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the historical value of the site and assure it's preservation during the phase out and disposal of the Naval Air Station.

On the basis of information obtained through archaeological survey, it seems unlikely that anything of historic or prehistoric significance would be affected by the completion of this project, if, during the course of project construction anything of presumed archaeological significance is encou
