This report presents the results of an archaeological survey in the Middle Oconee-Walnut Creek watershed where the U.S.D.A., Soil Conservation Service proposes to construct seven flood water-retarding structures (Structures 3, 4, 5, 11, 16, 20, and 21) and one multiple-purpose structure (8).

This report is the result of archaeological investigations on U.S. Forest Service land on the Apalachee River near the Morgan County community of Swords, Georgia.

This is an addendum to archaeological survey reports (Goad 1975a, b) submitted to the Soil Conservation Service for proposed drainage projects in the Bishop Creek Watershed, Appling and Jeff Davis Counties, and the Ten Mile-Briar Creek Watershed, Bacon County, Georgia.

Between December 1989 and June 1990 the University of Georgia, in conjunction with the Coosawattee Foundation, Inc. and a grant from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, conducted an intensive archaeological survey of approximately 1570 acres (636 hectares) in Bartow County, Georgia.

The dock construction on the Ogeechee River at Hardwicke Estates, Bryan County will not affect any archaeological sites. However, it should be noted that just northeast of the dock site is Seven Mile Bend, the location of extensive prehistoric occupation as well as the historic site of Hardwick.

Construction of the tidegate at the Landings on Skidaway Island will result in the partial destruction and flooding of a fairly large midden bordering the tidal creek. The portion of the midden to be affected is approximately 18 inches thick, 15 feet wide, and 75 feet long.

The Casey Canal. Parkway is to be constructed through a low, swampy area drained by the Casey Canal. The area is densely forested, and in most places, is impenetrable. Only short segments of the-right-of-way have been cleared.

The entire length of the combined projects was checked. No sites of historical or archaeological interest were observed. No future investigation is recommended.

The southern half of the area to be effected by the proposed highway construction was surveyed on foot. This section begins approximately 200 yards west of the intersection of SR 15-US 441 and Milledge Ave. And terminates at the point where the proposed highway will intersect US 78.
