Ledbetter, Jerald

This report presents the results of an intensive archaeological survey performed by Southeastern Archeological Services, Inc. in northern Butts County where the Georgia Transmission Corporation wishes to construct a 115/25kV substation near Keys Ferry Road.

During the course of testing phase investigations on Reynolds Plantation's Horseshoe Bend tract in 2003 (Figure 1), a few sites previously recommended ineligible were revisited by the field crew of Southeastern Archeological Services.

As an exercise in the use of metal detecting as a survey method on eroded and disturbed EuroAmerican houses sites, 9GE140 and 9GE1513 were revisited by Joel Jones and Jerald Ledbetter in 2003. Both sites have been determined ineligible to the NRHP (Espenshade and Mitchell 1988).

Site 9GE168 is a multi-component site with evidence of Historic period structures dating to two separate occupations; one in the early to middle nineteenth century and a second in the early twentieth century. A small scatter of Middle Archaic period lithics is also found on the site.

Site 9GE 1511 is an extensive Historic period site with evidence of multiple structures suggestive of a nineteenth century plantation complex located west of Richland Creek (now flooded by Lake Oconee).

While conducting historical investigations of the property owned by Reynolds Plantation, a small cemetery was brought to the attention of the senior author (Figure 1 ). The cemetery was one of several on the Reynolds property that was being preserved in place.

The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) intends to widen and improve an approximately 12-km (7.5-mi) length of Jonesboro Road, from its intersection with Interstate Highway 75 in Henry County westward to U.S. Highway 19/41 in Clayton County.

Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) wishes to develop much of the southern two-thirds of Colonels Island, the portion south of U.S. Highway 17 that has not already been developed. Because of wetlands issues, the project is likely to be subject to review by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
