This paper reports on research conducted into the current condition of Confederate riverine obstructions located in the vicinity of Elba Island, Chatham County, Georgia.

The V. S . Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District , is planning to widen a 5 . 6 - mile stretch of the Savannah Harbor shipping channel . Three previous cultural resources investigations had been conducted for the project .

The Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) is proposing to develop a new container berth and a paved container storage facility at their Garden City Terminal in Chatham County, Georgia.

The project would widen and reconstruct SR 3/US 19 from County Road to approximately 300 feet north of CR 8/Atwater Road in Thomaston, Georgia.

This survey is a part of the GDOT Low Impact Bridge Program (LIBP). From the LIBP Manual: "The 100-foot expanded archaeology survey corridor on typical GDOT projects will be waived in some instances, given that projects in the Program are not intended to extend beyond existing ROW.

This project involves the replacement Bridge 195-5043-0 that carries Old Wildcat Bridge Road over Masons Mill Creek, located approximately 6.5 miles northeast of Danielsville (Attachment 1). The existing bridge, built in 1966, is no longer structurally sufficient and needs to be replaced.

This document is to summarize the preliminary findin9 of an archaeological and engineering study of the Confederate ironclad, C.S.S. Georaia (Figure 1). The results are based on historical, field and laboratory data gathered during this Phase I study.

During the period 11-17 February 2004, Ocean Surveys, Inc. (OSI) conducted a geophysical survey investigation in the Savannah River Entrance Channel between River Stations 30+000 and -30+000 (Figure 1).
