Report Abstracts

An archaeological survey of a proposed road right-of-way was conducted in a portion of the Oconee National Forest. The known site was delineated and tested. The site dates primarily to the Lamar period with minor components dating to the Middle Archaic and Early Woodland periods.

Nineteenth-century descriptive and photographic information on Overlook Mansion exists for most of the house, grounds, and outbuildings. There is, however, little information on the backyard areas adjoining the 1870 ballroom and 1858 dining room.

A cultural resources reconnaissance investigation was conducted by the author on the proposed site of the SCFRC Atmospheric Deposition Testing Laboratory, at the Georgia Forestry Commission's National Tree Seed / USFS Fire Lab facility, near Macon, Georgia.

Archeology in the Southeastern United States received its first big impetus during the 1930's under the financial support of the Works Project Administration. During this period many sites were excavated without the results being published. Such a site is Hawkins Point.

The project involves the widening of Ocmulgee East Boulevard from its intersection with Emery Boulevard south to the present four-laned section at Lanier Heights The lanes would be increased to four with paving expanded from the present 24 feet to 48 feet.

Near the mouth of the Great Ogeechee lie the remnants of what was once a modest Confederate Army earthworks, a place dubbed by some historians as Georgia's "Thermopylae" or its "Alamo" (Colquitt 1930).

In preparation for development of the Sweet Hill Subdivision along State Route (SR) 144 8.5 miles east of Richmond Hill in Bryan County, Georgia (Figure 1), Mr. Charles L. Stafford required a Phase I archeological assessment of the 19.5-acre tract.

Project BRZLB-25(6) consists of the replacement of a narrow and substandard bridge on CR 191 over the South Prong of Big Creek in Brantley County, Georgia. This project has been subjected to two previous surveys by Erica Jeter, the first in 1999 and the second in 2001.
