Scotch Presbyterians came to Oglethorpe's new colony of Georgia in 1735 and established New Inverness at the mouth of the Altamaha River. This settlement eventually became the city of Darien, which flourished as a small port for the shipment of native products such as turpentine and shingles.

6734 Blackwelder, Jon R. Phase I Archaeological Survey of the Proposed Reconstruction/Rehabilitation of the Bridge on SR 18 at CSX Railroad in Durand, Meriwether County, Georgia

The existing State Route (SR) 18 bridge over the CSX Railroad consists of two 12-foot travel lanes (one in each direction) and 2-foot paved shoulders. This bridge is 150 feet long by 24 feet wide with a 5-foot wide concrete sidewalk on the north side.
