Report Abstracts

This letter addresses issues set forth in review comments provided by you and the Georgia Historic Preservation Division (HPD) on our report entitled: Cultural Resources Survey of the Proposed Hickory Log Creek Reservoir Site, Cherokee County, Georgia, dated January 18, 2000.

The proposed undertaking is defined as the 121.2 acre [49.1-hectare (ha)] Eden wood residential development site in northeast Paulding County, Georgia which is in the northwest part of the state.

The proposed project consists of the widening and replacement of the bridge on SR 15 Alt. over Curry Creek in the city of Jefferson. The project would replace the existing bridge with a 5 barrel culvert.

The proposed undertaking is a 250-foot (lit) monopole lattice-designed telecommunications tower built to accommodate multiple carriers. The tower project area is located at 2811 U.S.

Project BHN-002-6(38) would construct two parallel bridges on SR 11/US 129 at Allen Creek in Jackson County. A new 175 foot by 38 foot bridge would be constructed east of the existing bridge to serve the southbound traffic.

The Rocky Mountain cultural resource investigations began in 1972 and have continued to 1997 with preparation of the project cultural resource technical synthesis. The initial cultural resources management plan (CRMP) was completed in 1981 by James J. Shive and amended in 1982.

In the summer of 2001, Fort Stewart began to experience an infestation of Southern Pine Beetles (SPB) (Dendroctonus frontalis). An outbreak had occurred in the summer of 2000, but the conditions of the summer of 2001 suggested that this year would be much more severe and damaging.

The proposed project would involve the repainting of the existing bridges at 18 locations in Jackson and Walton Counties. Existing right-of-way varies from bridge to bridge. All construction will be limited to the existing right-of-way.

In coordination with the Georgia Department of Transportation and the Georgia Historic Preservation Division, R.S. Webb & Associates developed an archeological survey plan to reliably, yet efficiently, identify potentially significant archeological resources in the study corridor.

This document synthesizes the results of the various cultural resource studies conducted at the site of the Rocky Mountain Hydroelectric Project in Floyd County, Georgia, between 1972 and 1993.
